Yellow Mule Cabin is a 12-by-14-foot historic ranger shelter built in 1920, located at 8,650 feet between a mountain meadow and evergreen forest in the Madison Range. Accessible only by trail or off-road vehicle, the single-room cabin sleeps up to three people on cots and features a wood stove, dining table, basic cookware, and a propane lantern. An outhouse vault toilet sits just outside. Outdoor enthusiasts use the site to access the adjacent Buck Creek Ridge Trail and McAtee Basin. Guests must bring their own drinking water, fuel, firewood, bedding, and trash bags.
The road in has not been measured -- unknown, not bad.
Secluded here -- the nearest through road is 3.6 miles off, a single-site campground. Cabins and shelters rather than pads -- 1 hike-in site. Sphinx Mountain stands 1,651 ft above the site, 3.6 miles southwest. The nearest town, Big Sky, is 6.3 mi off.
