Built in 1934 by the CCC, Bear Creek Bunkhouse sits at 6,250 feet along the Trail Fork of Bear Creek at the foot of the Madison Range and the Lee Metcalf Wilderness. Surrounded by aspens and Douglas firs, this single-room shelter offers winter public stays with electricity, two single beds with pads, a wood stove, a refrigerator, and an oven. An outhouse stands 150 feet away, and additional toilets sit in the adjacent campground. The location serves as a winter base for cross-country skiers and snowshoers accessing local trailheads, though guests must bring their own drinking water.
The road in has not been measured -- unknown, not bad.
Black Mountain stands 2,448 ft above the site, 1.3 miles east. Secluded here -- no through road within 3.7 miles, a single-site campground. Trail Fork Bear Creek runs 0.2 mi off. Cabins and shelters rather than pads -- most of them shaded. The nearest town, Big Sky, is 13 mi off.
