Petersburg Campground sits along the pine and hardwood shoreline of the 70,000-acre J. Strom Thurmond Lake, 25 miles from Augusta. The facility includes four bathhouses with flush toilets and hot showers, a boat ramp with a courtesy dock, a fishing pier, dump stations, a playground, and two swimming beaches. A shaded trail winds through the grounds, while the trailhead for the 27-mile Bartram Trail sits just outside the entrance. The surrounding waters host bass, bream, and catfish, and nearby day-use areas lie within a short drive of the Lake Thurmond Visitor Center and Dam.
