All 3 miles in are maintained only for high-clearance vehicles. Dirt the whole way in (3 miles). Climbs 2,100 ft over 3 miles -- sustained grades near 22%, with pitches to 27%. Stretches run along a shelf with a drop of up to ~160 ft on the downhill side. Little level ground alongside -- few of the stretches measured have a flat spot to pull onto. Winds through 20 switchbacks. Dead-end road -- no mapped turnaround; expect to back out or unhitch.
Mount Maxwell stands 1,882 ft above the site, 1.2 miles west. A well-travelled stretch -- travellers have camped along here. North Fork Of The Purgatoire River runs 1.2 mi off. The nearest town, Walsenburg, is 33 mi off.
