Purgatoire Campground is a primitive facility at 9,800 feet elevation near the headwaters of the Purgatoire River in the Culebra Range. The site has two loops: one grassy meadow loop designed for equestrian campers with room for large horse trailers, and one wooded loop set in aspen and spruce. Campsites feature picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, trash service, grass-gravel parking aprons, and hand-pump drinking water. The North Fork Trail #1309 departs directly from the campground for hiking, biking, and horseback riding.

Road difficulty 4 of 5 -- a difficult drive in. Recorded as maintained only for high-clearance vehicles, dirt, pitching to 18%, 100% of it on a shelf. Flat ground is scarce -- under a tenth of the terrain within a few hundred yards is level.

Cuatro Peak stands 3,775 ft above the site, 2.5 miles west. North Fork Of The Purgatoire River runs 0.1 mi off. Exposed here -- the nearest through road is 0.1 miles off, a 23-site campground. The nearest town, Walsenburg, is 32 mi off.

September normals 3963°F, 2.3″ rain. Monthly averages, PRISM 1991–2020.
