Designated sites only

U.S. Forest Service allows overnight stays only at the designated sites here.

Ponderosa Group Campground sits at an elevation of 8,600 feet in the Pike and San Isabel National Forest, set among pine and aspen trees near 40-acre Lake Isabel and St. Charles Creek. Built for up to 60 overnight guests, the site includes a picnic shelter, group charcoal grill, eight campfire rings, a horseshoe pit, and a volleyball court. Hand-pump drinking water, vault toilets, and dumpsters are provided. Visitors use the adjacent lake for non-motorized boating and trout fishing. Nearby trails include the Cisneros, Snow Slide, and St. Charles trails leading up toward St. Charles Peak.

The road in has not been measured -- unknown, not bad. Flat ground is scarce -- under a tenth of the terrain within a few hundred yards is level.

Private here -- the nearest through road is 0.8 miles off, a single-site campground. A group campground -- most of them shaded. Saint Charles River runs 0.9 mi off. North Peak stands 2,422 ft above the site, 5.0 miles southeast. The nearest town, Colorado City, is 12 mi off.

September normals 3964°F, 2.2″ rain. Monthly averages, PRISM 1991–2020.
