A 60-foot granite pyramid on a wind-swept treeless summit 20 miles east of Laramie at 8,247 feet—the highest point on the first transcontinental railroad. Built 1880–1882 and designed by architect H.H. Richardson, the monument honors Union Pacific Railroad financiers Oakes and Oliver Ames with bas-relief portraits by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Open year-round as a Wyoming state historic site with views across the high plateau landscape and a reminder of railroad history.
