A 4.5-mile stretch of gravel National Forest road in Bedford County, VA. The road serves Apple Orchard Mountain Overlook. The road is open seasonally, August 1 to January 4.
All 4.5 miles in are maintained for passenger cars. Gravel the whole way in (4.5 miles). Climbs 1,600 ft over 4.5 miles -- sustained grades near 12%, with pitches to 16%. Stretches run along a shelf with a drop of up to ~120 ft on the downhill side. Little level ground alongside -- few of the stretches measured have a flat spot to pull onto. Winds through 3 switchbacks.
