Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s-40s, Fort Parker State Park spans 1,458 acres along the Navasota River in Limestone County. A 423-foot dam creates a 750-acre lake with largemouth bass, catfish, and crappie. The park features campsites, screened shelters, and air-conditioned cabins scattered around the lake with nearby restrooms and showers. Seven miles of hiking and biking trails, including the 2-mile Springfield Trail, traverse oak woodlands and reveal historical sites. A 5.3-mile paddling trail follows limestone bluffs. The site preserves history from the 1836 Fort Parker massacre and the former county seat of Springfield.
