Built in 1956 for fireguards, Deer Creek Guard Station is a rustic three-room cabin sitting at 5,100 feet amidst Douglas fir and ponderosa pine, 31 miles from John Day. Deer Creek flows through the grounds, which feature an outside picnic table, campfire ring, and accessible vault toilet. The furnished interior sleeps up to six with a Murphy bed, futon, bunk bed, propane fireplace, propane lights, and a kitchen equipped with a propane stove, refrigerator, and cookware. Guests come to hunt big game, ride horses, and fish for steelhead and trout in Deer Creek and the South Fork John Day River.
