Set at 8,000 feet in the Zuni Mountains west of the Continental Divide, McGaffey Campground occupies the historic site of a 1930s railroad logging and sawmill town. It features mature ponderosa pines and small hills that break up the overnight spaces. As the largest campground in the Mt. Taylor Ranger District, the property includes a volunteer host on site, with internal roads continuing past the entrance to reach the Oso and Page camping sections.

All 1.8 miles in are maintained for passenger cars. Gravel the whole way in (1.8 miles).

A body of water lies 0.6 mi off. The nearest town, Iyanbito, is 10 mi off.
