U.S. Forest Service allows overnight stays only at the designated sites here.

Medicine Point Lookout sits at 8,409 feet between the east and west forks of the Bitterroot River. The historic 1940s-era L4 tower features a 14-by-14-foot room on a 10-foot frame with a 30-inch catwalk, offering views of the Bitterroot Mountains. It sleeps up to four with a two-person bed platform, wood stove, propane camp stove, and cookware, but lacks water and trash collection. The grounds include hitching racks and an outdoor toilet. Reaching the site requires a 3.5-mile hike gaining 2,000 feet of elevation from the trailhead.

The road in has not been measured -- unknown, not bad. Flat ground is scarce -- under a tenth of the terrain within a few hundred yards is level.

Private here -- the nearest through road is 1.2 miles off, a single-site campground. Cabins and shelters rather than pads -- 1 hike-in site. The nearest town, Hamilton, is 31 mi off.

September normals 2558°F, 1.5″ rain. Monthly averages, PRISM 1991–2020.
