West Fork Butte Lookout is a 14-by-14-foot cabin perched on a rocky knob near Lolo Pass, overlooking Lolo Peak and the Bitterroot Mountains. The facility sleeps up to four people on bunk beds with mattress pads and features a wood-heating stove, propane cookstove, propane lantern, table, chairs, and a vault toilet outdoors. There is no potable water on site. During winter months from December to May, access requires a 7.5-mile trek by skis, snowmobiles, or foot. Nearby recreational options include Lolo Creek fishing and local hiking trails.

The road in has not been measured -- unknown, not bad. Flat ground is scarce -- under a tenth of the terrain within a few hundred yards is level.

Secluded here -- the nearest through road is 2.4 miles off, a single-site campground. Cabins and shelters rather than pads. The nearest town, Lolo, is 14 mi off.

September normals 3865°F, 1.7″ rain. Monthly averages, PRISM 1991–2020.
