Wild Horse Island State Park in MT -- Campground & RV Camping in Montana

Wild Horse Island, the largest of Flathead Lake's islands at 2,164 acres, sits at 3,749 feet elevation with meadows, grasslands, and Ponderosa pine and Douglas fir forests. The island sustains a small wild horse herd of five to six animals, plus about 160–200 bighorn sheep, mule deer, waterfowl, and bald eagles. Accessed only by boat, the park protects one of Montana's last remaining shortgrass prairie ecosystems. Some 56 private residential lots occupy the island while most acreage remains state-protected. Hiking trails wind through the pine forests.
