Medano Pass Primitive Road offers 21 designated roadside campsites within Great Sand Dunes National Preserve, beginning 5.2 miles past the Piñon Flats Campground. These primitive, first-come, first-served sites are situated along a corridor that crosses deep sand and traverses Medano Creek nine times. Access requires a high-clearance 4-wheel drive vehicle during warmer months. The surrounding terrain provides habitat for wild bighorn sheep.
