Trinidad Lake State Park spans 2,860 acres in Las Animas County four miles west of Trinidad, anchored by a scenic dammed reservoir. The park supports camping, fishing, boating, and hiking through mixed terrain of prairie and forest. Historical highlights include coal mining ruins at nearby Cokedale and an exposed Cretaceous–Paleogene (K-Pg) boundary in the southern portion. A segment of the historic Santa Fe Trail's mountain route runs through the park. The destination attracts over 300,000 visitors annually.
