Alvarado Campground sits at 9,000 feet on the slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, shaded by ponderosa pine, aspen, lodgepole, and gambel oak. The layout spans three levels: a lower section for tents and RVs, an upper section for walk-in tent sites, and a middle section accommodating equestrian campers with space for portable corrals. Amenities include dirt-gravel aprons, tent pads, lantern posts, and access to Alvarado Creek. Nearby trailheads access the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness and the Rainbow Trail.

All 3.4 miles in are maintained for passenger cars. Mostly gravel, with 0.4 miles of dirt. Flat ground is scarce -- under a tenth of the terrain within a few hundred yards is level.

Horn Peak stands 4,400 ft above the site, 3.0 miles southwest. Crowded here -- the nearest through road is 0.1 miles off, a 51-site campground. A body of water lies 0.4 mi off. The nearest town, Lincoln Park, is 31 mi off.

September normals 4166°F, 2.0″ rain. Monthly averages, PRISM 1991–2020.
