Portola Redwoods State Park campground sits within 2,800 acres of old-growth coast redwood forest in the Santa Cruz Mountains, reached by winding mountain roads that create a secluded retreat. The park's 55 family campsites nestle among towering redwoods, thick ferns, and huckleberry undergrowth, with 18 miles of trails following Peters, Pescadero, and Fall creeks where waterfalls cascade down mossy banks. The Old Tree Trail leads to a 1,200-year-old redwood over 300 feet tall; Tip Toe Falls flows along Fall Creek. Group and backcountry trail camps also available.

The road in has not been measured -- unknown, not bad. Flat ground is scarce -- under a tenth of the terrain within a few hundred yards is level.
