Built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, this historic fieldstone cabin sits at 5,000 feet elevation at the entrance to Cave Creek Canyon. Located one mile west of Portal, Arizona, the five-room structure accommodates up to five guests with two bedrooms, a full kitchen, indoor plumbing, a wood-burning stove, and electricity. Outside features include outdoor furniture and a propane grill. Visitors come to explore the surrounding canyon's towering rock formations, perennial creek, hiking trails, and exceptional year-round birding.

Road difficulty 1 of 5 -- an easy drive in. Recorded as maintained for passenger-car comfort, paved, pitching to 4%. Overhead clearance here is posted at 15 ft -- the tightest site sets the limit.
