Setting
Trout Pond Recreation Area is a mountain water retreat featuring two bodies of water: Rock Cliff Lake, a 17-acre impoundment, and Trout Pond, West Virginia's only natural lake, formed by a mountain stream sinkhole. The property includes a white-sand swim beach, a boat ramp for sail and motorized craft, bank fishing access, a children's playground, and 30 day-use picnic sites. Campers have access to hot showers, flush toilets, and sites equipped with picnic tables and campfire rings, with electric hookups at select spots. Hiking options range from the easy 4-mile Trout Pond Loop to steep trails climbing Long and Devil's Hole Mountains.
Getting there: From Strasburg, VA, follow State Route 55 west for 18 miles to Wardensville, WV. Turn left on SR 23/10, and travel for about 6 miles. Turn right on CR 16, and travel for 6 miles. Turn left onto Forest Service Road 500, and drive about 1 mile to the Trout Pond Recreation Area entrance.
