Setting
Evergreen Mountain Lookout sits at 5,587 feet in the Wild Sky Wilderness. Built in 1935 and later used as a World War II aircraft warning post, the historic 14x14-foot cabin sleeps four and includes a twin bed, extra mattresses, a table, propane stove, and cooking gear. A vault toilet is located down the ridge. The site has no water or heat. Reached via a steep trail traversing an old forest burn area, the lookout offers views of Mount Rainier, Glacier Peak, and the Henry M. Jackson Wilderness.
Getting there: From State Route 2, turn north onto Beckler River Road (Forest Road #65), which is 0.5 miles east of the town of Skykomish. Continue on Forest Road #65 for 13 miles to Jack Pass. At Jack Pass, turn right onto FSR #6550 and drive about 1 mile to FSR #6554. Drive FSR #6554 6.5 miles to the trailhead. It is another 1.5 mile hike to the lookout.
- Well separated here, a single-site campground with the nearest through road 0.8 miles off.
- Flat ground is scarce: under a tenth of the terrain within a few hundred yards is level.
- Cabins and shelters rather than pads.
