Check the unit's current orders before you commit.2.8 of the 21.3 miles in are maintained only for high-clearance vehicles, mostly gravel with 2.8 miles of graded dirt. Stretches run along a shelf with a drop of up to ~140 ft on the downhill side. Winds through 52 switchbacks. Dead-end road with no mapped turnaround, so expect to back out or unhitch. Water crossings 11.9 and 19.1 miles in.
North Sister Knob stands 1,767 ft above the site, 2.0 miles east. Private here, with the nearest through road 1.7 miles off. Cowpasture River runs 0.4 mi off.
George Washington and Jefferson National Forest, North River Ranger District: Dispersed camping in one location is allowable up to 14 days in any 30-day period. Camp at least 100 feet from any stream or other water source.
