Setting

Limited privacy

Altamont Campground sits at 7,400 feet among dense stands of aspen, fir, and spruce along the paved Alpine Loop Scenic Byway. Adjoining the Mount Timpanogos Wilderness Area, this group facility includes a large paved parking lot, a covered picnic shelter with tables and a campfire circle, flush toilets, and drinking water. Hikers use the site to access the 15-mile Timpooneke Trail to Mount Timpanogos' summit, which begins just across the road. Nearby attractions include Timpanogos Cave National Monument and non-motorized boating at Tibble Fork Reservoir.

Getting there: From Salt Lake City, Utah, travel south on I-15 to Alpine-Highland exit 284. Travel east on Highway 92 approximately 13 miles through American Fork Canyon, then 3 miles south on the Alpine Loop Scenic Byway. Campground is on the left.

  • Limited separation from through roads or other sites here, a 2-site campground with the nearest through road 0.1 miles off.
  • Flat ground is scarce: under a tenth of the terrain within a few hundred yards is level.
  • Roberts Horn stands 3,703 ft above the map pin, 2.4 miles south.
  • Estimated night sky: Bortle 4, a rural sky with a glow on the horizon.
  • A pond lies 0.7 mi off.
