Desolation Gray Canyons Screen Cabins in UT
Bureau of Land Management allows overnight stays only at the designated sites here.
Sand Wash Ranger Station sits at the end of a dirt road along the Green River, serving as the launch point for floating Desolation and Gray Canyons. The remote, primitive site consists of an eight-site campground, a natural dirt boat ramp, vault toilets, and a ranger contact station. To offer protection from heavy seasonal mosquitoes and weather, four of the sites feature 12x16-foot screened cabins containing a table and bench. There is no drinking water or trash service on site, requiring visitors to be self-supported.
Road difficulty 4 of 5 -- a difficult drive in. BLM plans this as maintained only for high-clearance vehicles -- condition unverified. Recorded as dirt, pitching to 2%, 100% of it on a shelf.
Exposed here -- the nearest through road is 0.1 miles off, a 4-site campground. Cabins and shelters rather than pads -- 4 sit on the water, most of them shaded. The nearest town, Roosevelt, is 32 mi off.
September normals 45–78°F, 1.1″ rain. Monthly averages, PRISM 1991–2020.
Set by Bureau of Land Management. Stage 1 and 2 orders change within days -- check the current order before you build a fire.
