Sand Island Recreation Area is a riverfront camping facility situated along the San Juan River beneath red sandstone walls. Located near Bluff and the Cedar Mesa area of Bears Ears National Monument, it features 21 individual campsites under shade-providing cottonwood trees. Each site includes a tent/trailer space, picnic table, and fire ring. Shared amenities include vault toilets and seasonal drinking water. The site serves as the main launch point for multi-day float trips down the San Juan River and features the Sand Island Petroglyph Panel right on the north cliff face.
