Desert campground at 4,500+ feet in the Chihuahuan Desert, 32 miles northeast of El Paso. Built around distinctive natural rock basins (huecos) that trap rainwater in this high-altitude desert between the Franklin and Hueco Mountains. Twenty campsites with water and electric hookups, hot showers, restrooms, and dump station; back-in parking accommodates RVs up to 70 feet. The dramatic syenite rock formations display millennia of pictographs accessible via guided and self-guided tours. Camping, hiking, bouldering, and birdwatching available; campfires prohibited to preserve the ancient imagery. Nearby: El Paso museums, Fort Bliss, Franklin Mountains State Park, and El Paso Uplands wildlife trail.
