Setting
Set at 5,400 feet in the Chisos Mountains, Chisos Basin Group Campground offers seven tent-only sites surrounded by rocky cliffs and montane shrubland. Located in Big Bend National Park, each site includes a picnic table, charcoal grill, and bear-proof food locker, with drinking water and toilets nearby. No RVs or generators are permitted, except for one small vehicle in Site O. The campground serves as a primary hub for hikers, sitting a mile from major trailheads for the Lost Mine, Window, and South Rim trails, as well as Emory Peak.
Getting there: From Interstate 10, take highway 385 south to Fort Stockton and then on to Marathon. From Marathon, go 40 miles south on Highway 385 to the north entrance of Big Bend National Park. Drive straight 26 miles (42 km) to Park Headquarters at Panther Junction. Turn right and drive for three miles (1 km). Turn left at the Basin sign and go seven miles (2.1 km) before making a right into the campground road.
