Spanning 5,369 acres of rugged limestone hills and canyon bottoms on the Bandera-Medina County border, Hill Country State Natural Area preserves relatively pristine Hill Country terrain. West Verde Creek runs through the preserve, enabling swimming and fishing when water permits. The Louise Merrick Unit, established through land donations between 1976 and 1982, offers primitive walk-in and hike-in camping with vault toilets, plus a nine-person lodge with kitchen and bathroom for groups. Over 40 miles of multiuse trails cross oak groves and grasslands. Donor Louise Merrick stipulated the land remain untouched by modern civilization while serving a useful purpose. The area opened publicly in 1984.
