Stephen F. Austin State Park spans 663 acres on the banks of the Brazos River west of Houston near San Felipe, featuring 473 acres of bottomland forest and hardwood swamp beneath pecan, oak, cottonwood, and sycamore trees. Five miles of hiking and biking trails wind through the landscape. The park provides full-hookup campsites, water sites, tent campsites, a group camp, screened shelters, and a cabin, plus a dining hall for group events. Wildlife includes white-tailed deer, bobcats, pileated woodpeckers, and barred owls. The San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site within the park commemorates Stephen F. Austin's 1823 colonial settlement.
