Setting
This campground lies along Grizzly Creek beneath a canopy of oak and ponderosa pine in the Black Hills National Forest. The site retains a historic Civilian Conservation Corps timber pavilion, though strictly prohibits towed vehicles and rigs over 24 feet due to sharp turns. On-site amenities include picnic tables, campfire rings, vault toilets, and drinking water, without electrical hookups. Campers have direct access to nearby trailheads for the Centennial Trail, Black Elk Wilderness, and the trek up Black Elk Peak, while Mount Rushmore sits just two miles away along Iron Mountain Road.
Getting there: From Keystone, South Dakota, take Route 16A west 1.9 miles to campground on the right.
- Little separation from through roads or other sites here, a 19-site campground with the nearest through road 0.1 miles off.
- Mount Rushmore stands 1,085 ft above the map pin, 1.2 miles west.
- Mostly tent-only sites, with most of them shaded.
- Grizzly Bear Creek runs 0.8 mi off.
- Estimated night sky: Bortle 3, a dark rural sky.
