The BLM manages four basic high-desert campgrounds along the John Day River basin in Central Oregon, set among juniper, sagebrush, and ponderosa pine at 2,000 feet elevation. Service Creek offers four walk-in tent sites under ponderosas and a boat launch. Muleshoe has six gravel drive-in sites on the river, two walk-in sites, and a primitive launch. Big Bend (four drive-in sites) and Lone Pine (five drive-in sites) sit along the North Fork. Each flat site has a table and fire ring. Campgrounds have accessible vault toilets but lack drinking water and trash service.
The road in has not been measured -- unknown, not bad.
