Setting
Memaloose State Park sits 11 miles west of The Dalles on the Columbia River gorge in Wasco County, overlooking the historic Memaloose Island—a burial ground sacred to the Chinook people whose name "Memaloose Ilahee" means "land of the dead." The park expanded from its 1925 origins when land from Interstate 84 construction was added in the 1950s. Visitors find a scenic riverfront viewpoint across from the partially submerged island, whose exposed portions remain a cultural landmark visible from the Interstate 84 corridor.
