Short Creek Guard Station sits at 5,000 feet in a small meadow surrounded by ponderosa pines, with a creek running alongside the cabin. The structure includes one private bedroom with a queen bed, a living room couch, and a kitchen equipped with a propane stove, refrigerator, heater, and lights. Summer stay amenities add a hot water heater, indoor flush toilet, and shower. Outside, the site features a picnic table, two grills, and a fire pit. Monument Rock Wilderness, Strawberry Mountain Wilderness, and the North Fork Malheur River are nearby.

The road in has not been measured -- unknown, not bad. Sits on broad, near-level ground.

North Fork Malheur River runs 0.1 mi off. Glacier Mountain stands 2,842 ft above the site, 4.3 miles west. Cabins and shelters rather than pads -- one sits on the water, most of them shaded. The nearest town, John Day, is 30 mi off.

September normals 3972°F, 0.6″ rain. Monthly averages, PRISM 1991–2020.
