Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area sits among rugged hills and rock outcroppings in Wayne National Forest around a 143-acre lake created by a 1939 Civilian Conservation Corps dam. The historic Vesuvius iron furnace stands at the base of the dam. Outdoor draws include a boat ramp, a swimming beach at Big Bend, over 25 miles of hiking trails, 45 miles of horse trails, and the 1/2-mile Longbow Archery Trail with 25 field targets. The site features two developed family campgrounds, a group camp for up to 50 people, and group picnic shelters, supported by accessible vault or flush toilets, showers, and drinking water.
