Designated sites only

U.S. Forest Service allows overnight stays only at the designated sites here.

Black Canyon Campground sits at 8,475 feet in a pine, aspen, and fir forest seven miles northeast of Santa Fe. The facility features single and double-family sites, including walk-to tent units, equipped with tables and campfire rings with grills. Accessible vault toilets are on site. Drinking water is currently unavailable, though an RV dump station is located next door at Hyde State Park. A 1.5-mile hiking loop circles the campground, and access to the Pecos Wilderness is eight miles away along Highway 475.

The road in has not been measured -- unknown, not bad. Flat ground is scarce -- under a tenth of the terrain within a few hundred yards is level.

Santa Fe Baldy stands 4,244 ft above the site, 4.3 miles east. Private here -- the nearest through road is 3.4 miles off, a 36-site campground. Most of them shaded. Rio Nambe runs 0.5 mi off. The nearest town, Tesuque, is 8.1 mi off.

September normals 4670°F, 2.3″ rain. Monthly averages, PRISM 1991–2020.
