Doc Long Picnic Site is a day-use facility set at 7,360 feet in a dense ponderosa pine forest along State Road 536. Named for a pioneering forest pathologist, the grounds feature two large CCC-style replica picnic shelters holding up to 30 people each, an adjacent playing field, unreserved single picnic spots with grills, vault toilets, and a seasonal volunteer information hut. Visitors have direct access to local trail systems, including the Bill Spring and Oso Corridor trails. Overnight camping is not permitted, and group shelter guests must supply their own grills.

Road difficulty 1 of 5 -- an easy drive in. Recorded as maintained for passenger-car comfort, paved, pitching to 10%. Flat ground is scarce -- under a tenth of the terrain within a few hundred yards is level.

Tecolote Peak stands 1,405 ft above the site, 1.7 miles northwest. Night skies measure Bortle 4 -- a rural sky with a glow on the horizon. Sulphur Spring lies 0.4 mi off. The nearest town, Sandia Knolls, is 4.7 mi off.
