Setting
Briar Bottom Group Campground rests at an elevation of 3,040 feet at the base of Mount Mitchell along a single loop. Designed for groups, the site features six individual camping areas that each hold up to 30 people, offering individual parking spurs and open tent space. Facilities include flush toilets, with hot showers, a sports field, volleyball courts, and a horseshoe pit accessible at the adjacent Black Mountain Campground. The South Toe River flows nearby for trout fishing, and local hiking routes include a 5.6-mile trail climbing directly up Mount Mitchell.
Getting there: From Asheville, North Carolina, take I-26 west to exit 9 onto 19 east toward Burnsville. Follow 19 to Micaville and turn right onto Highway 80. Continue south approximately 12-14 miles to Mount Mitchell Golf Course. Turn right on South Toe River Road and follow signs to Black Mountain Campground. Campers must enter through the main gate at Black Mountain Campground to get to Briar Bottom.
