Setting
Cataloochee Campground sits at 2,600 feet elevation along Cataloochee Creek in the historic Cataloochee Valley of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The grounds provide basic campsites equipped with flush toilets and drinking water, but offer no hookups or showers. The surrounding valley features mountain streams and preserved 19th-century log structures, including the nearby Palmer House museum and Steve Woody House. Hikers and horseback riders can access extensive trails directly from the area, including the Caldwell Fork, Rough Fork, and Boogerman loop trails.
Getting there: From I-40 take Exit 20 in North Carolina. Turn right onto Cove Creek Road and follow to the Park boundary. The road goes from pavement to gravel to pavement. Upon reaching the pavement the second time, turn left. Go 2.5 miles to an intersection and continue another .5 miles to the left.
