Setting
This area offers backcountry-style dispersed camping spread along the ocean beach of a 20-mile-long barrier island. There are no designated campsites or paved surfaces; all tent and vehicle camping takes place directly on the sand beach or along the sandy rear trail behind the dunes. The island is accessible exclusively by ferry, and four-wheel-drive vehicles are strongly recommended to navigate the soft sand.
Getting there: Take a ferry from Davis, NC over to Great Island on South Core Banks. The barrier islands of Cape Lookout National Seashore may only be reached by boat -- either your own boat or a ferry from the mainland.
