Set at 3,200 feet in an open meadow surrounded by evergreen forest, the historic Bend Guard Station sits a short walk from the Thompson River in Lolo National Forest. The two-story combined bunkhouse and cookhouse features four bedrooms sleeping up to 16 people on mattresses, electric heat, two flush-toilet bathrooms with hot showers, and a furnished kitchen with dual stoves and refrigerators. A horse corral with a frost-free hydrant is on site. Nearby trails accommodate hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing, with trout fishing on the river.
The road in has not been measured -- unknown, not bad.
Thompson River runs 0.3 mi off. Cabins and shelters rather than pads -- most of them shaded. Richards Peak stands 2,476 ft above the site, 4.8 miles south. The nearest town, Marion, is 21 mi off.
