Gird Point Lookout is a historic 1940s-era cabin perched atop an eight-foot tower at 7,702 feet in the Bitterroot National Forest, 20 miles east of Hamilton. The 14-by-14-foot structure features a surrounding 30-inch catwalk offering panoramic views of the Sapphire, Bitterroot, and Anaconda-Pintler mountain ranges. Inside, it sleeps four with two beds, a table, chairs, a wood-heating stove, a propane stove, and a lantern. Facilities include an outdoor toilet, though visitors must haul in drinking water and propane. Access requires a short hike along a moderate grade from the parking area.
Road difficulty 3 of 5 -- a rough drive in. Recorded as maintained only for high-clearance vehicles, dirt, pitching to 4%, 100% of it on a shelf. Flat ground is scarce -- under a tenth of the terrain within a few hundred yards is level.
