Alta Campground sits among tall ponderosa pines, fir, and aspen along the West Fork of the Bitterroot River in Bitterroot National Forest. The site draws visitors for fly fishing, wading, local peak hiking, and biking or off-road vehicle trail riding, with Painted Rocks Lake five miles north. The facility offers 14 gravel-spur campsites with tables and fire rings, accessible vault toilets, drinking water, trash bins, and a bear-proof food storage container. The historic 1899 Alta Ranger Station, the first Forest Service ranger station in the U.S., is five minutes away on Hughes Creek.
