A 9.8-mile stretch of gravel National Forest road in Missoula County, MT. The road serves Lolo Peak (Carlton Ridge) Trailhead. The road is open seasonally, May 16 to November 30.
1.5 of the 9.8 miles in are maintained only for high-clearance vehicles. Mostly gravel, with 1.5 miles of dirt. Stretches run along a shelf with a drop of up to ~140 ft on the downhill side. Little level ground alongside -- few of the stretches measured have a flat spot to pull onto. Winds through 8 switchbacks. Dead-end road -- no mapped turnaround; expect to back out or unhitch. Gates 0.9 and 3 miles in.
