Setting

Fairly secluded

Sitting at 5,874 feet atop Garver Mountain in the Yaak area of Kootenai National Forest, this 40-foot historic lookout tower sleeps four people. The 144-square-foot cab contains two twin beds with four mattresses, a wood stove, table, chairs, and basic cleaning tools, while an outdoor pit toilet sits at the base. There is no electricity or running water, so guests must pack in all drinking water, bedding, and supplies. The site rests directly along the Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail, near day-hiking routes and Garver Creek, which offers trout fishing.

Getting there: From Troy, Montana: Follow Highway 2 west for 9.5 miles to Yaak Highway 508. Follow Yaak Highway 508 north for 30 miles to the town of Yaak. Continue on Yaak Highway 92 to French Garver Road 276, turn right and follow road to junction with road 5857. Follow 5857 to the gate to Garver Mountain. The road continues beyond the gate for approximately 3 miles. There is a sign on the trail to the lookout. Note: The trail to the lookout is approximately 1/4 mile.

  • Well separated here, a single-site campground with the nearest through road 1.6 miles off.
  • Flat ground is scarce: under a tenth of the terrain within a few hundred yards is level.
  • Cabins and shelters rather than pads, with 1 hike-in site.
