Setting

Some privacy

Wurtz Cabin is a historic two-story log structure built in 1913 near the North Fork of the Flathead River, just south of the Canadian border. The cabin sleeps up to 12 people on two double beds and eight single beds, with a front porch facing a grassy lawn backed by dense conifers. Facilities include a propane cook stove, propane heater, wood stove, propane lights, kitchen table, cookware, and an outdoor vault toilet. There is no electricity or running water. The cabin sits near Glacier National Park and provides direct access to river kayaking, canoeing, and regional hiking trails.

Getting there: From Columbia Falls, travel north on Nucleus Avenue and turn east onto Railroad Street at the stop sign. The road becomes North Fork Road as it travels over the railroad overpass. Drive past the Schnaus and Ford rental cabins, and Wurtz is located on the west side of the road. Use caution during the winter, as the gravel road is only intermittently plowed. Chains and four-wheel drive are required for passage. The majority of the road from Columbia Falls to Wurtz Cabin is gravel, so be prepared for dust during your drive and at the cabin.
