Star Meadows Guard Station is a historic 1941 Forest Service compound 23 miles from Whitefish, Montana, featuring a two-room main cabin and a separate bunkhouse that together sleep 12. Set in a valley near Sheppard Creek, the site includes an electric kitchen, electric heat, outdoor fire pit, horseshoe pit, patio with grill, vault toilet with lights, and a seasonal hand-pump well. Trail #171A begins in the backyard, running 10 miles to Sylvia Lake, while the lower meadow accommodates extra RVs, tents, and stock animals.
Getting there: STAR MEADOW GUARD STATION 5250 Star Meadows Road Whitefish, Montana 59937 Travel from Whitefish west on Highway 93 approximately 12 miles to mile marker 139, turn left onto Farm to Market Road. Continue 1.7 miles; turn right onto the Star Meadows Road. Continue to mile marker 15 located almost across from the cabin driveway.
