Setting
Bannack, on 1,529 acres southeast of Dillon, is Montana's best-preserved ghost town and a National Historic Landmark. A gold strike in July 1862 sparked the settlement, which peaked near 10,000 residents and briefly served as the Territory's capital in 1864 before Virginia City took the honor. About 60 historic log, brick, and frame structures remain—including the Hotel Meade and an 1877 Methodist Church—accessible via walking tours. The park offers 28 campsites, fishing, and bird watching along Grasshopper Creek and surrounding foothills.
