Setting
South Abutment Recreation Area is located on the shores of Arkabutla Lake along the Coldwater River, shaded by rolling forests of oak, hickory, sweet gum, and beech. The campground provides 81 family sites with electric hookups and one group day-use shelter. Facilities include flush toilets, hot showers, and drinking water. The lake supports sailing, boating, and fishing for bass and crappie. Hiking options include the Coldwater River Nature Trail System and the Swinging Bridge Nature Trail, while an 18-hole disc golf course and 30,000 acres of public hunting land are located near the dam.
Getting there: From I-55, take the Hernando, Mississippi exit and follow Scenic Route 304 to the main dam. Follow signs into the recreation area; the campground is just south of the dam.
