Setting

Some privacy

Fuchs House is a historical five-bedroom concrete and stone house constructed in the late 1930s alongside the Black River in the Markham Springs Recreation Area. The fully furnished rental features two downstairs bedrooms and three upstairs bedrooms, two full bathrooms, and a kitchen; guests supply their own linens and towels. Outside, six natural springs pump millions of gallons of water daily into an 1800s mill pond with a historic wheel house. The surrounding dense forest of ash, elm, and maple offers river access for boating and fishing, plus the 1.5-mile Eagle Bluff Trail.

Getting there: From Poplar Bluff, take Highway 67 north for 14 miles, then drive west on Highway 49 for 9 miles (about 3 miles past the town of Williamsville). Take the first right after crossing the Black River to enter Markham Springs Recreation Area. The drive way to the Fuchs House will be the first Forest Road on the left.

  • Moderately separated here.
  • Markham Spring Pond lies 0.1 mi off.
  • Cabins and shelters rather than pads, with one on the water and most of them shaded.
