Setting
Zippel Bay State Park spreads across 2,906 acres on Lake of the Woods' white sand beach, with jack pine, birch, and aspen forests on gently rolling glacial terrain scattered with rock outcrops. Two campgrounds offer 57 sites with showers, vault toilets, and RV facilities. A swimming beach, boat ramps, and fishing pier serve water recreation; 6 miles of hiking trails and 11 miles of cross-country skiing trails extend through the landscape. The bay hosts one of four Great Lakes breeding areas for endangered piping plovers and supports walleye and sauger fishing, drawing moose, bears, river otters, and occasionally Great Lakes wolves.
